COURSE DESCRIPTION:

USDOT invited Challenge Cities to participate in forums and webinars to learn about available resources to help them accomplish their Mayor’s Challenge activity goals. One such activity goal is to Gather and Track Bicycling and Walking Data. Pedestrian and bicycle data programs should be initiated or expanded to better understand walking and bicycling activity levels, which supports project prioritization, safety analysis, and performance monitoring, among other use. This data will enable more informed decision-making, such as targeting improvements where the need is the greatest. Once such resource is NCHRP Report 797, Guidebook on Pedestrian and Bicycle Volume Data Collection. This guidebook provides guidance on implementing a non-motorized volume counting program. Sponsored by Pedestrian and Bicycle Council

INSTRUCTORS: Kelly Laustsen, Engineering Associate, Kittelson & Associates, Inc.; Robert Schneider, Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; Tony Hull, Pedestrian & Bicycle Transportation Planning Specialist, Civil Street

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1)    Reviewing the NCHRP Report 797 guidebook as a resource for supporting a non-motorized count program.
