Past, Present, Future of Pedestrian Crossing Research/policy

                                                  An ITE Learning Hub Webinar

Description:

The webinar will also briefly summarize how this past research informed the “Guide for Improving Pedestrian Safety at Uncontrolled Crossing Locations” released by FHWA in 2018. For instance, the 2018 guide builds on the 2005 Zegeer study by identifying sets of countermeasures that can be used to address roadway conditions where a marked crosswalk alone is insufficient. Finally, the webinar will introduce research topics that are underway or of strong interest to pedestrian safety practitioners. For example, FHWA is developing a Guidebook on Identification of High Pedestrian Crash Locations, and NCHRP 17-73 Systemic Pedestrian Safety Analyses will develop a process for agencies to identify risk for pedestrian crashes. These studies will help agencies consider both crash history and potential for crashes when improving safety for pedestrians at uncontrolled crossing locations.
