Webinar Description
The focus of this webinar will be to understand the ethical issues that arise in transportation design from an equity and social justice framework. As transportation is transformed by the application of new/emerging technologies our industry will be faced with a pressure to respond to this new technology within a built environment which does not adequately meet the needs of all users of the public. The speakers in this session will talk specifically about how to maintain focus on upholding our ethical obligations to plan for the health, safety, and welfare of the public while embracing this new technology. Hand-in-hand with these ethical issues are issues of social justice, as the space between those that can afford to use the new technologies and live in communities with adequate infrastructure and those that cannot continue to grow.
Learning Objectives:
- Identify ethical and social justice issues arising from design choices, with the ability to correct these before final approval of plans;
- Recognize ethical and social justice issues in the built environment, and understand how past decisions have led to present outcomes; and
- Evaluate the various competing ethical challenges present as we adapt our transportation system to meet future technological demands while still protecting our most vulnerable users.
