Webinar Background:
Through the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT's) Smart City Challenge, in 2016, the Department selected Columbus, Ohio, to define what it means to be a "smart city" and serve as a model for other cities wishing to fully integrate innovative technologies--such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and applications--into the transportation network. The Smart Columbus program connects people by creating opportunity for city residents to better access jobs and services while improving the overall safety and efficiency of the city's transportation network. The Smart Columbus program is comprised of eight individual projects covering three themes--enabling technologies, emerging technologies, and enhanced human services. These projects collectively represent interoperable, networked wireless communications among vehicles, the infrastructure, and travelers’ personal communications devices and to make surface transportation safer, smarter, and greener.
It’s been five years since Columbus won Smart City Challenge, guided by the belief mobility is the great equalizer of the 21st century. With $50 million in funding from two grants, Columbus has deployed the most comprehensive set of mobility technology demonstrations in a four-year period of any city in the United States, demonstrating how these technologies can be deployed to promote prosperity, and encouraging more than $700 million in regional aligned investment. In deploying these projects, Columbus has also created a playbook of learnings that will assert Columbus’ leadership in smart city innovation and help accelerate the smart city journeys of cities around the nation.
