Traffic Signal Series: Context Sensitive Signal Timing

Webinar Description:
This webinar will examine situations where traditional signal design and timing techniques may not adequately address the unique and/or uncommon traffic conditions present at a location. The webinar will identify these situations and seek to understand the system context and what can be done to match it. This might include such techniques as adjusting signal cycle lengths, data-driven decisions, left-turn phasing, night (off peak) operations, and coordination vs. free flow. The webinar will then describe how the District Department of Transportation manages the complex balancing act of many stakeholders while conducting the Citywide Traffic Signal Optimization Program to prioritize the mobility and safety of pedestrians and cyclists throughout this network, and develop an integrated, multimodal traffic signal system to meet its Vision Zero goals.

Learning Objectives:

  • Recognize uncommon traffic signal locations and determine design and timing criteria for them
  • Learn different types of signal timing techniques based on their system characteristics as well as how to improve their systems
  • Describe what types of signal timing treatments can be implemented to advance ped/bike mobility and safety
  • Learn how ongoing signal retiming and optimization projects can help facilitate ped/bike improvements
