Building Better Bike Lanes With the Advocacy Community

Building Better Bike Lanes with the
Advocacy Community Leading the Way
A Live ITE Learning Hub Webinar

Portland recently restriped six blocks in downtown with a buffered bike lane. While that isn't a major accomplishment or capital investment by any means, the collaboration with the advocacy community and the grass roots group "Better Block" signals a shift towards collaboration between the local university, new leaders in the community, ITE professionals, and the public sector. This webinar will describe the issues experienced and how Portland built a buffered bike lane with the advocacy community in the lead.

Learning Objectives
At the conclusion of this webinar, participants will:

  • Learn how ITE practitioners are working collaboratively with students at the local university and within the advocacy community.
  • Describe how collaboration can lead to win-win solutions.
  • Identify potential challenges of working in these situations.

Target Audience

Transportation planners, traffic engineers, and public agency members
Presenters
Ryan Hashagen/Gwen Shaw, Portland Pedals, Portland, OR, USA
An Introduction to Advocacy- This presentation will focus on the emergence of a new group in Portland called Better Block. Inspired by the national group, Portland advocates initiated calls for street changes on several corridors and are currently planning for an active coming year of projects.

Peter Koonce, City of Portland Office of Transportation, Portland, OR, USA
The role of the public sector in community lead projects is evolving. In this example, the presenter will talk about the actions that the City took to support the advocacy community and ultimately describe conditions that were important to both business and local leaders, concerned about traffic impacts.

Ben Chaney, DKS Associates, Portland, OR, USA
Advocacy and Engineering- Mr. Ben Chaney served the role of technical support as a practitioner and will talk about his involvement drawing up traffic control plans and ultimately deploying the orange cones as a livable streets advocate.

Kate Petak, DKS Associates, Portland, OR, USA

Project Process and Delivery- Better Block projects are developed and deployed over a very short period of time. Learn about key elements for working efficiently to install a successful better block, including partnerships, technical details, public involvement, data collection, and funding.
