Streets and roads serve different functions, yet many engineers lack hands-on experience designing multimodal streets that safely accommodate all users. This interactive workshop uses Brick City Lab, a hands-on design experience with LEGO-style modular buildings, to explore how the built environment influences driver behavior and street operations. Participants will learn key psychological principles of urban design before working in teams to redesign a street based on real-world scenarios. With guidance from experienced professionals, teams will navigate design tradeoffs and present their solutions for feedback from experts and a local group trained in urban street design.

Adaptive Reuse: Transforming Orlando's Freeway Crossroads This is a combined workshoip and technical tour. The I-4 and SR 408 interchange has long been a key transportation hub but also a barrier between Downtown Orlando and surrounding neighborhoods. Recent freeway improvements enabled two transformative projects: the Hicks Avenue / Terry Avenue Project, which restores the historic street network with bike paths, roundabouts, and pedestrian-friendly design, and the Canopy - Under "I" Project, which converts space under the I-4 viaduct into a dynamic park and event space. These projects, led by the City of Orlando, FDOT, and FHWA, enhance connectivity, mobility, and placemaking in the urban core. Future plans include revitalizing public housing and creating a commercial corridor, further integrating the area into the city. Join this tour to see how transportation infrastructure is being reimagined to bridge communities and support economic growth. Special Note: This combined workshop and technical tour will begin at the hotel, where attendees will engage in workshop discussions before boarding a bus for a guided technical site visit.
