Smart Columbus - System Architecture and Standards Plan

Webinar Background:

Through the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT's) Smart City Challenge, in 2016, the Department selected Columbus, Ohio, to define what it means to be a "smart city" and serve as a model for other cities wishing to fully integrate innovative technologies--such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and applications--into the transportation network. The Smart Columbus program connects people by creating opportunity for city residents to better access jobs and services while improving the overall safety and efficiency of the city's transportation network. The Smart Columbus program is comprised of eight individual projects covering three themes--enabling technologies, emerging technologies, and enhanced human services. These projects collectively represent interoperable, networked wireless communications among vehicles, the infrastructure, and travelers’ personal communications devices and to make surface transportation safer, smarter, and greener.

The System Architecture and Standards Plan is a comprehensive document that lays out the architecture for each of the eight Smart Columbus projects, and associated standards that were used in the design of each project’s solution. It includes four architecture views for each project: enterprise, functional, physical, and communications. Since Smart Columbus has developed these projects under the Smart City Challenge grant, the USDOT’s National Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) Architecture framework was applied and referenced throughout the process to better create an interoperable and replicable system. This webinar will discuss architecture for each of the projects and associated standards (whether Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) or other related standards) that are being applied. The webinar will highlight the process and tools used to develop the robust compilation of architecture views for each project, including USDOT Systems Engineering Tool for Intelligent Transportation (SET-IT), as well information from the National ITS Architecture, whose framework and resources are offered via the USDOT’s Architecture Reference for Cooperative and Intelligent Transportation (ARC-IT) 8.3. The City will also present the lessons learned in creating the robust document which spans multiple interconnected yet individual systems.
