Smart Columbus - Human Use Approval Summary

Webinar Background:

Through the United States Department of Transportation (USDOT's) Smart City Challenge, in 2016, the Department selected Columbus, Ohio, to define what it means to be a "smart city" and serve as a model for other cities wishing to fully integrate innovative technologies--such as automated vehicles, connected vehicles, and applications--into the transportation network. The Smart Columbus program connects people by creating opportunity for city residents to better access jobs and services while improving the overall safety and efficiency of the city's transportation network. The Smart Columbus program is comprised of eight individual projects covering three themes--enabling technologies, emerging technologies, and enhanced human services.

This webinar will present the Draft Human Use Approval Summary (HUAS) deliverable. The HUAS describes the Smart Columbus Institutional Review Board (IRB) process and how it has been executed at the program and project levels during both demonstration and performance measurement activities. The IRB process has been integral to the launch process for the various Smart Columbus projects, in that it assures research involving human participants is designed and conducted in an ethical manner and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. The webinar will provide key information on the process and outcomes of the IRB process for each project. The webinar will provide background on the importance of Human Use Approval and IRB oversight including governing regulations and guidance, outline the IRB application and review process by project, and describe the relationship of IRB to other program tasks, including Systems Engineering, and Performance Measurement. The webinar will conclude with a discussion of key challenges and lessons learned from the IRB process while also identifying drivers impacting potential future IRB activities in the program.
