Intro. ITE's RP Guidelines for Clearance Intervals and Traff

Webinar Description:
On Monday, March 2nd, ITE made available for sale the ITE Recommended Practice Guidelines for Traffic Signal Change and Clearance Intervals. We realize this is a highly anticipated document and in preparation for this release, we are making resources available to our members to help you both understand the background and changes.

The goal of this guidance is to create a consensus methodology for calculating and evaluating traffic signal change intervals that can be consistently implemented by transportation agencies. The recommendations presented should yield reasonable times for the yellow change and red clearance intervals for traffic signals, assisting transportation professionals in enhancing intersection safety, maintaining reasonable traffic flow, and providing for movement of vehicles, bicycles, and pedestrians.

Jeff Lindley, ITE’s Chief Technical Officer, will host this webinar, it will be an opportunity for you to better understand the background in the development of this recommended practice, and the guidance included in it.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explain the changes to practice in this area being recommended by ITE
  • Describe the differences between the traditional kinematic equation and the new extended kinematic equation, as well as its use
  • Recognize the role of flexibility, assumptions, engineering judgement, and use of actual vs assumed speed data in the calculation and implementation of traffic signal change and clearance intervals
